An electrical panel upgrade in Oklahoma City is more than swapping a box on the wall. Along with the new panel, an electrical panel replacement usually touches the meter base, the service conductors feeding it, and the grounding and bonding system that ties the whole house together. The result is a service rated for more amperage, with enough breaker spaces to carry the circuits a modern household actually runs.

Most of the homeowners who call us about a breaker box upgrade fall into one of two groups. The first has an aging system - a fuse box, a 60 or 100 amp service, or a panel so full that tandem breakers are stacked into every slot. The second isn't having trouble yet but is about to add load: an EV charger in the garage, a hot tub on the patio, a heat pump, a standby generator, or a finished-out addition.

It matters because the panel is the one piece of your electrical system every other circuit depends on. Obsolete equipment, corroded lugs, and undersized service don't announce themselves - they show up as warm breakers, nuisance trips, and connections that loosen over the years.   • You still have screw-in fuses instead of breakers
  • The panel is labeled Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco, or Challenger - equipment with well-documented failure problems
  • Breakers trip when two ordinary appliances run at the same time
  • There are no open slots left, or tandem breakers doubled up to make room
  • You see scorch marks, rust, or discoloration inside the panel, or hear buzzing at the cover
  • Any part of the dead front feels warm to the touch
  • Lights dim noticeably every time the air conditioner starts

What drives the cost of a panel upgrade.

No two panel upgrades price out the same. Here's what genuinely moves the cost:

  • Target amperage and code-required breakers. Higher amperage means heavier conductors and different equipment, and 400 amp services often need two panels or a meter-main configuration. Code also determines how many AFCI and GFCI breakers the job needs, and those cost more than standard breakers.
  • How much of the service changes beyond the panel itself. Relocating the panel to a new spot means new feeders, wall work, and sometimes trenching, and replacing the meter base, riser, or weatherhead - or handling an underground service - adds material and labor of its own.
  • The condition of what's already there. Older homes often need new ground rods, water-line bonding, or a corrected grounding electrode system to meet code, and aluminum, brittle, or short wiring may need pigtailing or extending before it lands safely on new breakers. More circuits also means more terminations.
  • Permit and inspection fees. Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman, and nearby municipalities each set their own, and utility scheduling can affect timing.

How long does an electrical panel upgrade take?

Most residential panel upgrades are completed in a single working day. The inspection and the utility reconnect are scheduled around that day, and we tell you in advance which day each piece lands on so you are not guessing.

Will my power be off during the upgrade?

Yes. The power has to be off while the service is transferred to the new panel. We give you the expected window before we start so you can plan around refrigeration, medical equipment, or working from home.

Do I really need 200 amp service?

Not always. We run a load calculation based on your home's square footage, heating and cooling equipment, appliances, and anything you plan to add. Some homes are served well at 150 amps, many land at 200, and larger homes with heavy HVAC, a shop, or a pool may need 400. We size it to the calculation instead of guessing.

Do you pull the permit and deal with the utility?

Yes. We pull the permit with your municipality, schedule the inspection, and coordinate the utility disconnect and reconnect. You do not have to make those calls.

Can my existing breakers move into the new panel?

No. Breakers are listed for a specific panel, so a new panel gets new breakers. That also means arc-fault and ground-fault breakers get installed where current code calls for them, which older equipment usually did not have.

Do I need a panel upgrade before installing an EV charger?

Sometimes, but not automatically. It depends on your existing service size, what is already connected, and where the charger is going. The load calculation answers it.
